Process Groups

Process Groups are not project phases; they are sets of processes that interact and repeat throughout the project lifecycle. They have clear dependencies and are highly interactive. Most project management methodologies are based on these concepts.

You may cycle through these groups multiple times during a project. For example, you might initiate and close both a feasibility study and a testing phase separately.

The Five Process Groups

1. Initiating
   Defines new work—either a new project or a new phase. Ensures you have the authority to proceed.

2. Planning
   Establishes objectives and scopes out the work. Includes task planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.

3. Executing
   Focuses on carrying out project tasks and delivering the intended outputs.

4. Monitoring and Controlling
   Tracks progress, reviews performance, and manages changes. Includes change management.

5. Closing
   Finalizes all activities across the other groups to formally close a project or phase.
